Camino Pilgrimage Packing List

Camino Packing List

Read this for helpful background information on what to wear while walking the Camino and what to avoid wearing.  The most important consideration on this list is your feet.  You need proper shoes and socks, and ensure the shoes are broken in and fit correctly.

  • Walking shoes are OK; trail runners are preferredboots are not recommended.
  • After walking shoes – such as sandals or flip-flops – you want to rest your feet and dry out your shoes in the evenings.
  • Socks for walking & others for evenings – Merino Wool is best – light, no odor, reduced irritation
  • Hiking Pants – no jeans with explanation here
  • Short-sleeved t-shirts (light wool)
  • Long-sleeved shirt for chilly mornings
  • A Fleece or similar for cold mornings or evenings
  • Sun hat or cap
  • Sunglasses – a must!
  • Water bottle – a must!  Carry in your backpack.
  • Walking Poles/Sticks – we recommend purchasing along the Camino as these are widely available in towns.
  • Backpack – supplied by Catholic Journeys
  • Camera or use a cell phone
  • General painkillers
  • Snacks for backpack
  • Rain cover for the backpack, if needed as a poncho, will cover
  • Toilet paper – You will generally find cafes en route, but toilet rolls are not always available, so put one roll into the backpack
  • Sunscreen – a must – carry with you in your backpack
  • After sun lotion, if you easily sunburn
  • Antihistamine tablets if prone to allergies
  • Blister cushions such as Compeed – or moleskin – are invaluable if you think you might blister.
  • Binoculars – Spain is one of the best countries for birdwatching, so bring them if you already have a pair.
  • The weather can be unpredictable, so a light, windproof raincoat that you can stuff into your backpack is always handy.  Alternatively, pack a poncho.

Use this Camino list in conjunction with the Catholic Journeys regular travel checklist.
