Proposed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1, Sun, Feb 4

Fly from Des Moines (DSM) to Rome (overnight flights)

Day 2, Mon, Feb 5

The driver and Escort will meet the group at the airport and transfer to the hotel for check-in. Afternoon free to explore. Mass and dinner, followed by an optional Rosary with a priest in St. Peter’s square. Overnight in Rome

Day 3, Tues, Feb 6

After breakfast, visit the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Wall and the Catacombs of St. Sebastian. Enjoy a special lunch today at the restaurant Cecilia Metela. In the afternoon, have Mass and visit the Basilica of St. Mary Major. followed by a visit to the Church of St. Peter in Chains and Angelicum University of St. Thomas Aquinas. Dinner and overnight in Rome

Day 4, Wed, Feb 7

After breakfast, attend the Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square or the Audience Hall. The Audience is celebrated each Wednesday by His Holiness, Pope Francis (pending the papal schedule). After the Papal Audience, there will be time for lunch and shopping.  In the afternoon, visit the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem church to see the relics of the True Cross, the excavations at Saint Clement, the Holy Stairs, and have Mass at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the Cathedral of Rome.  Dinner and overnight in Rome.

Day 5, Thursday, Feb 8

After an early breakfast, visit and have Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica and pray at the tomb of St. John Paul II. Visit the Vatican Museum to see the Tapestry Gallery, Raphael Rooms, and Sistine Chapel. Afternoon free for lunch and shopping, with an optional visit to the North American College with Fr. Kyle and take in the best view of Rome from its roof terrace. Evening prayer with Seminarians at North American College. Dinner and overnight in Rome.

Day 6, Fri, Feb 9

Pending confirmation from the Vatican, begin the day with breakfast and a Scavi tour to the Tomb of St. Peter under St. Peter’s Basilica. The remainder of the day is free for lunch and shopping.  Mass at Testaverde at Basilica of Santa Maria or the Church of Santa Cecilia. Dinner and overnight in Rome.

Day 7, Sat, Feb 10

After breakfast, enjoy a walking tour visiting the Santa Maria in Vallicella, also called Chiesa Nuova, which contains the relics of St. Philip Neri, the church of St. Agnes, and Piazza Navona. Afternoon free time for lunch, visit the Basilica of St. Augustine, the Tomb of St. Monica, and San Luigi dei Francesi to see Caravaggio’s famous painting, The Calling of Saint Matthew which depicts the moment at which Jesus Christ inspired Matthew to follow him. Visit Santa Maria della Vittoria, to see the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. Mass today will be at St. Maria Sopra Minerva, which contains the body of St. Catherine, followed by a visit to the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain.  Dinner and overnight in Rome.

Day 8, Sun, Feb 11

Orvieto-Assisi – After breakfast and a morning at leisure, walk to St. Peter’s Square to pray the Angelus with the Holy Father at Noon. Afterward, travel north to Assisi through the beautiful Italian countryside stopping in Orvieto, to celebrate Mass in the Cathedral which houses the Eucharistic Miracle. Continue on to Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis. Dinner and overnight in Assisi.

Day 9, Mon, Feb 12:

After breakfast, begin with Mass and a visit to the Basilica of St. Francis which contains his tomb and a series of frescoes depicting his life followed by a visit to the Santuario Della Spogliazione where the tomb of Blessed Carlo Acutisis located.  Walk through the picturesque town of Assisi to visit the church that honors St. Clare, foundress of the Poor Clares. There will be free time for lunch and before traveling down to the hill to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, where you will visit the Rose Garden where St. Francis and other friars lived and the secluded sanctuary where in the early centuries St. Francis often went to pray and contemplate. Dinner and overnight in Assisi.

Day 10, Tue, Feb 13:

After breakfast, you will travel to the Sanctuary of Eremo della Carceri located in a forest on Mt Subiaco. Here you will celebrate Mass and visit the church built by St. Bernardine of Siena, the small Oratory where the friars gathered for prayer, and the Cave of St. Francis. Return to Assisi for a free afternoon to enjoy lunch and leisure time. Dinner and overnight in Assisi.

Day 11 Wed, Feb 14

After an early breakfast, depart for Rome and your return flights to the USA.
