JUNE 16: MONT SAINT-MICHEL / NORMANDY Enjoy an early visit to Mont Saint-Michel, a World Heritage Site and a place where the Archangel Michael appeared on three occasions. Consecrated in 709, the Abbey was made into a prison during the French Revolution, and then in 1874, it became the responsibility of the Historical Monuments Department. Now, since 1969, it has become the home to a monastic community, ensuring the continuation of a spiritual presence. Rightly called "The Wonder of the Western World," Mont Saint Michel is surrounded by a magnificent bay, which is the theatre of the greatest tidal ranges in Europe. This afternoon we will continue on to the area near the Normandy Invasion Beaches, which will be our home for the next 5 nights. (B, D)

After our visit to the museum, we make our way to Lisieux, home of St. Therese whom Pope Pius X called "the greatest saint of modern times." We will begin with Mass and a video at the Basilica of Saint Therese, one of the biggest and most magnificent religious structures built in the 20th-century. While in Lisieux we will visit Les Buissonets, St. Therese's family home where we will find many relics, clothing, and personal objects belonging to the "little flower" on display. It is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of medieval European art. We will visit Sword and Juno Beaches which were invaded by the British and the Canadians on D-Day, and the Pegasus Bridge which was captured by the British early on the morning of June 6, before the D-Day Invasion. It is here where Joan of Arc was threatened with torture on May 9th, 1431. On the upper floors one can view various documents relating to Joan’s imprisonment and trial. We will visit the St. Joan of Arc Museum containing a series of life size wax re-creations depicting important moments in Joan’s Life and we will see the white cross on the old market square marking the place where she was burned at the stake and celebrate Mass at St. Joan of Arc Church.
