Proposed Itinerary
Day 1 - Depart Hartford, CT for your flight to Mexico City. Upon arrival you will transfer to your hotel. After Mass, you will have a Welcome Dinner. Day 2 - After breakfast at your hotel, you will have Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. After Mass you will have a tour of the Basilica, where the Tilma of Juan Diego is located, and the grounds including the hilltop Chapel of Tepeyac where the history of Our Lady's visit to Guadalupe will be related. You will have time for private prayer and to venerate the Miraculous Tilma. In the afternoon, you will have lunch and visit Tupetiac, site of the Fifth Apparition. A church is built over this spot and is known as the Church of the Healing. Continue on to San Juan Teotihuacan, the most widely known archeological zone in Mexico. Of particular interest will be the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, the oldest structures in the area. Return to Mexico City for dinner and overnight. Day 3 Enjoy a Full day excursion to Cuernavaca and Taxco. Cuernavaca is a beautiful city known as the 'City of Eternal Spring' for its joyous atmosphere and enjoyable climate. Continue on a scenic drive to Taxco, which is known as the 'Silver City' and is one of the prettiest towns in Mexico. The city tumbles across a hillside with winding cobblestone streets, tile roofed buildings, cozy squares and a strong Old World ambiance that has survived for hundreds of years. Here you will visit one of Mexico's grandest churches, Santa Prisca. It was built in 1759 by French immigrant Jose de la Borda who literally stumbled upon a huge silver claim. Santa Prisca is a riot of ornate Baroque styling flanked by twin bell towers. The interior displays some of Mexico's beautiful gold leaf ornamentation. You'll have plenty of time to have lunch and also visit the marketplace and the famous silversmith shops! Return to Mexico City for dinner and overnight. Day 4 Today you will enjoy the sights of Mexico City, beginning with a visit to the Metropolitan Cathedral located on the Zocalo, the main square. It is the largest church in all of Latin America, housing many art treasures of the colonial period. Inside you will visit the Chapel of the miraculous Cross of Poison. Originally made of white marble, the cross miraculously turned black from absorbing poison placed on it intended to kill the Bishop who traditionally kissed the feet of the cross every day at mass. From the cathedral you will walk to the National Palace built in 1693 to see the Diego Rivera murals that blazon the inner hallways of the building. In the afternoon you will visit Chapultepec Park, where you will visit the Anthropological Museum, housing thousands of artifacts, including burial tombs, giant Olmec stone heads, the famous Aztec Calendar Stone and a reconstructed Mayan temple and you will visit Chapultepec Castle, perched on top of Chapultepec Hill. Once the home of Maximillian, and Spanish Viceroys, it is now a museum. There will be tome for lunch and shopping. Travel to Puebla for dinner and overnight. Day 5 - After breakfast, you will visit the Church of Santo Domingo and have Mass in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, one of the most elaborately decorated Baroque chapels in Mexico. On the walls, golden vines form the frames of six paintings depicting the mysteries of the rosary. From there you will visit St. Francis of Assisi Church and view the incorrupt body of Blessed Sebastian de Aparicio before traveling to Tlaxcala to visit the Shrine of San Miguel del Milagro. It is here that St. Michael the Archangel appeared to Diego Lazaro de San Francisco in 1631 and told him of a miraculous spring. Continue on to Ocatlan, where in 1531, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Juan Diego Bernadino. The Blessed Virgin Mary burned her image into the trunk of an old oak tree. Ever since, Mary has been honored as Our Lady of Ocatlan, Our Lady of the Oak that Burned. There will be time for lunch before continuing on to Cholula to visit the Santuario de la Virgen de los Remedios (Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Remedies). The Church was built by the Spanish in colonial times (1594) on top of what looks to be a large natural hill, but is in fact, one of the worlds largest pyramids. Return to Puebla for dinner and overnight. Day 6 - After breakfast you will have Mass and a tour of the beautiful cathedral in Puebla, before heading to the airport in Mexico City for your return flights to the Hartford.
